Silver Donkey

Feeling a bit better after 3 volumes of Ex Machina, 2 volumes of Sandman, and a night in which I finally slept for more than 4 hours at a stretch.Ex Machina is adult, serious, and complex. I must say that it bored me a bit in the beginning – but then everything came together for me in volume three. I still like the mystery bits better than the political bits, but then that’s me. I’m home sick. Now that I’m a grown-up and only stay home sick when I’m really unable to do my job, it’s incredibly boring and unpleasant. Especially in the summer. However, (and I really didn’t know this as a kid) comics are awesome – especially when home sick. Easy to read, lots of pictures, an element of childish indulgence…. So after the sleep and the sniffing and coughing, today has been all about Smokey and the Bandit and Ex Machina.

Good Things

Really enjoying right now-


I couldn’t put Tanglewreck down. It was fun, imaginative, bizarre…. and yet… it’s frustrating. I feel like the balance between good ideas and structure/developement was way off. The images were awesome – especially the description of being trapped in a black hole. But the leap between that brilliant dark description and the subsequent resolution of the black hole dilemma – fast, easy, and without any context. Pastels & Tanglewreck

I was so very excited about Tanglewreck – and I haven’t finished it quite yet, but I’m worried that it’s falling apart. I LOVE Jeanette Winterson, so I’m still hoping for the best, But there was an incredibly sappy deus ex machina and I’m not sure if I can swallow it, even if the overall ending is good. Even if I really WANT to. Ack. We’ll see.Maybe it’s just that I’m eager to start two very intriguing advance copies – The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing and The Silver Donkey….
